Nice Music

As I've poked around MySpace a bit, I've noticed a strange trend: music that plays automatically when I enter someone's site. Who decided that this was a reasonable or even desirable thing to do? Here I am, clicking along innocently, when a random song blares out of my laptop's speakers and scares the bejesus out of me.

I'm a radio guy by trade, so I really enjoy and appreciate music. That is, I appreciate my own music. I'm not nearly as interested in what someone else is listening to. Don't get me wrong, I think that having the option to link up some of your favorite tunes on your MySpace page for others to sample and enjoy is the cat's freakin' pajamas. Why, however, is everyone blasting this stuff at me the minute I wander into their page? If you came over to my house, would it be cool if I met you at the door blasting Def Leppard in your general direction?

It would be one thing if you were a member of Def Leppard. (Say, for example, you're the one-armed drummer). If this were the case, firing up Pour Some Sugar on Me for anyone and everyone in earshot might make sense. If, on the other hand, you work at Denny's, it seems random and a bit crazy to great me with a song whenever I stop in to find out which Magic: The Gathering color you are.

To alleviate this problem, I plan to post a list of  approved bands to each and every person I know. As long as everyone sticks to these groups, my enjoyment of MySpace will continue.

Thank you for your time.
